A study of the West African sub region, shows that we all do have
common problems. Saw a police man take bribe from a cab guy just to use
the road, heard people complain of systemic failure, government
insensitivity to the citizens they govern, no constant electricity,
street hawking and begging, massive unemployment, increased cases of
crime and other vices, and on and on; the list is endless.
Could recall a young man from De Gambia who spoke so bitterly of the
Gambian government, as he spoke I saw how pained he felt revealing facts
of a nation that has been governed by just two President's since
independent, the incumbent in office for 27yrs now. I took a deep breath
and asked myself, what is wrong with our motherland, why are our
Leaders power drunk! He went further to inform us that if this message
gets to his excellency whose name is like a sentence, he will obviously
not return back to De Gambia because he will be banished. A country of
about 2m people, with only just one university and a single government
owned TV station who's primary responsibility is to promote governments
good will. A nation where freedom is denied. It was a breath taking
moment for us from this sub region.
Similarly, brothers and
sisters from Ivory coast, Serialone, Togo, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and
Nigeria. All shared their own stories. We all saw and noticed a common
problem amongst us.
Behold "LEADERSHIP' failure is our problem.
No wonder President Obama saw the need to initiate a youth oriented
programme here in Africa to train a new generation of young African
leaders who would consciously take over leadership roles in the region
suffering from leadership failure epidemic.
The reason am part of this pioneer set is simply because I want to be a pioneer change
Agent in my home country. So I encourage you guys to take these
lectures seriously as this will help us be properly equipped for the
task ahead.
God bless president Obama,
God bless West Africa,
God bless you, I mean you, emerging young African leaders.
